Hi, i just purchased my first volvo, but it seems have a misfire, i changed the coil and lead on cylinder 2 and 3 and changed the spark plugs aswell, no real difference, so then i got a compression test done on all cylinders, cylinder 3 failed, the mechanic told me it's most likely a damaged valve, and told me its gonna be very expensive, anyone have any ideas, car is 1998 S40 2.0T SE, any help appreciated, Cheers
What does the car sound like when its running, apart from the misfire, Does it sound like its blowing air back up inlet manifold or out of exhaust or is it smoking alot on idle?????
If the compression is low on cylinder 3 then the head will have to come off . i would take the car back and get your money back or get him to fix it ... Maybe the cambelt broke and bent a valve if the belt looks new ... and he's bodged it to sell it ..

thanks for all the help guys, just to update you, the engine had burnt a valve and has no gone for a rebuilt, (change valve, all valves recut, skimmed and new head gasket) it costing quite alot but i hope it will be ok after that, i did find a T4 engine but i found the turbo was different and the ecu had to be chipped so i decided against that, im getting the timing belt doe while the engine stripped, so hopefully everything should be ok now, is there anything else i should consider checking/replacing while the engine is in bits? i'll keep you posted, Thanks agian
Hi, i'm having the same problem, the car is actually being garaged on monday, for compression test ect, was you advised to have all the valves replaced or is this the right thing to do? I would be greatful if you could advise me of the expected cost of all valves being replaced, just so it dos'nt hurt so much..Thanks
